[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Aug-02 AT 10:13 PM (EST)]I have a 97 F250HD Diesel with Automatic transmission. Periodically it shifts from 2nd to Drive extremely hard. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does happen it is generally around 40 MPH. Does anyone have any ideas?
Hey mine does this too. Feels like you popped the clutch sometimes. at about 40. course its AOD... I was told this was normal by the dealer. But, I dont buy it. I did notice, however, than after I got the tranny serviced (flushed) it got a little better.
My '92 f150 did something similar to this when I left it sit for a long period of time (a couple of weeks). The more I drove it the better it got. After a couple of weeks of regular driving, it would stop until I let it sit again. It was almost as though the computer had to relearn how to shift to fit my driving style or something - wierd!
Never did do anything about it since it would go away with regular use but I always wondered what could be causing it?????

Number 1, when was the last time it was serviced? That's my first guess. It would make sense that if the fluid was bad or a poor quality used at last servicing, then that would cause hard shifting. Start with the simple stuff first. Good luck.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I just recently purchased the truck so I am not sure when it was last serviced. I did have the oil changed right away but didn't think about the tranny. I will take it in Monday morning to get it serviced and see what happens.
