alternator wiring

I have a 68 F-100. I put in a new alternator. The old one only had wires to FLD, BAT, and GRD. I see another stud for STA. What does the stator wire do and is it necessary for the vehicle to operate properly. I ask because I do not think the stator wire was hooked to the old alternator and appears to have been unhooked for a long time while the truck was running. Thanks.

Hi,

I may be wrong here but I thought that the electric choke is what connected to the Stator post of the alternator.

Correct ! Stator terminal is the power connection for electric choke's.

so, if I have a manual choke then there is no stator wire? Does it do anything else? Does it have anything to do with the gauge, because it has not worked in a long time.
