OK, I have a headache! I have an 87 B II 2.9 Fuel injected with 4-WD. Two weeks ago it ran fine, a week and 6 days ago, it didn't. It just turns and turns but will not run. I get plenty of spark but no fuel is getting in to the engine. I can spray starter fluid in the air intake and it will run until the starter fluid is gone. I get fuel up to the pressure regulator but i don't know if it is going any farther( I disconnected the fuel line and by-passes the fuel pump relay.). Does anyone know what I can do to pinpoint the problem and get back on the road? I am so lost here!! Thanks in advanced.
This is a whole new world for me and at the risk of sounding dumb, what do i need to do in order to check the pressure. I see the valve on the rail, but i am kind of afraid to do any more damage by tinkering with somthing i am unsure of. can I just hook up a guage on it?
I apprecaite your patience with me, i would rather sound dumb than make matters worse. Thanks.
You can buy a fuel pressure testing kit (essentially a gauge with a couple pieces of hardware) from just about any parts store. In essence, it just hooks up and you measure the pressure. I would suggest consulting a repair manual (Chiltons or Haynes would be fine for this operation. As you get more involved in DIY work, you may want to find a "professional" edition manual. Many libraries have them) for instructions (There's an online version of Chiltons available at www.autozone.com).
Ok. I will have to wait until I get paid but i will get a manual and fuel pressure kit. I looked at the autozone site you referred to (thank you) and found the kit. I will post the results as soon as i get them. Thank you very much.
Well. I got a Haynes repair mauual and a fuel pressure testing kit. The fuel pressure pumps up to just a hair over 40 psi.
I checked for spark and that looks good. I pulled a spark plug and noticed that is is dry. So a assume that the fuel is getting into the rail alright but the injectors are on strike and not firing.
I do not knpw the first thing about checking into injectors. Please if anyone can help me I would greatly apprecaite it.
You need to take the noid light and plug it into the injector plug-in. Crank the engine. If it doesn't light, you're not getting juice to your injectors. If that's the case, it could be a number of things. Depends on whether its equipped with a cam sensor, crank sensor, or tach sensor. We're not sure which these trucks have. My husband had an '87 ranger, and he had that problem while installing a new engine, and it turned out to be the tach sensor was unplugged. Good luck, sorry I cant help more. Angel
I apprecaite all the help I can get. I will go out and find me a noid light to test the injectors as soon as I can. In the meantime, is there any way to pull the engine codes from it without a code reader?
I intend to keep my B II for a while if I can so I will get a code reader but it may take me another week or two to get it.
I want to thank everyone that has replied. I appreciate the assistance.
I dont know if I did it wrong or wht but I dint get anything. I ran a little jumper wire and used a light tester. But I never got any flashes or anything. Am I doing somthing wrong? any suggestions?.. Thanks averyone.
This may sound stupid, but does your check engine light come on when you turn your key on? It should be on and stay on until it starts/runs. The bulb in the cluster may be burned out - a 194 wedge type bulb if my memory is good.
I had the key in the RUN position. Turning it to START will only crank unless I have someone spraying starting fluid in the air intake. But i read through another post on this board that also explained the set-up and process for getting the fault codes.
I had the same results; or lack thereof.
I checked my test light and it seems to be working fine. I am going into town on monday and hopefully I can find a NOID kit.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get one? I tried looking on a few web sites but I would like to, if I can, just pick one up somewhere.
I expect just about any good parts store will have a oid light.
If you couldn't get codes out, do you even have power to the computer? Computer controls the injectors (and a whole bunch of other stuff). If it has no power, the engine won't run. Check the fusible link and the relay and the rest of the computer's wiring.
