bogs way down to nothing

1988 2.9 ranger

when I start it up I can go down the road normal for awhile,
about 1 mile or so. Then if I turn key on and off and start it again Ican go for maybe another mile but same thig over and over again
This is my friends truck so I can not look at it right know,
many things have been replaced not sure what yet.
Also new motor many vacum and eletrical parts. battery goes dead to. please help if you can.

Welcome to FTE!!!

I would start by pulling the codes (see tech info post- pulling eec-iv codes), testing fuel pressure and checking for spark when it dies.

How long between starts? If it is 5-10 minutes I would guess carb ice. If it is immediate, my guess would be Don't Know. For the battery, fun the engine and put a voltmeter on the battery posts. It should read 14 V. If it is only 12 or less, the charging system is not working.

Sorry, I didn't mean "fun" the engine, I meant "run" the engine. Still having problems with this typing! Is this how you become a "posting guru"?

it doesent completly die . It will run about 10 to 20 mph. when it is shut off and started again it will run for about a mile again then bog right down again,smoke black like a chimney, whyen it is started up it seems fine but anly for a little bit. the code thing is our next step. thanks for the reply I willbe back. I do like the heck out of this site, it is great.
