Problems I could do without

OK so over the last 3-4 days I notice a stall at about 45mph, the truck doesn't stall just requires me to put the pedal down further in order for it to continue gaining speed. Today I go out and start it up and notice it has some blue smoke puff out of the exhaust when I kick down the high idle. So I take my brother to the airport (12 miles one way) and when I get there in park I rev it up to 1800 rpm now that its warm and as soon as I let OFF the big puff of blue smoke happens again and this time I hear a pop out back. I then go home and try it there before I shut it off and it now seems fine, no puff at idle down. I still had boost coming home and going there. I will throw AE on there tonight and see if I can duplicate it. I am thinking either turbo or inj cup.

I have a 99.5 mods ats turbo shroud, overboost anihilator, reg return, dieselsite boots, ccv mod and many more.

Probably the turbo thrust bearing gone south from too much boost.

Dan I have never been able to get higher than 20 psi of boost. I also thought the overboost annihilator took care of that. I have had that and the ats shroud on for 2 years now. I will check the turbo wheel for movement and see how it looks.

If you need to tear into the turbo, bring it up. My garage is always open.
I'm baffled by your low boost numbers. I've thought a lot about it since we met up and can't think of why your boost is so low.

Lee I appreciate both offers, I will be taking off the intake tube in the next days or so and I will let you know, thanks

Mike, I might just take you up on that garage, besides you have a topside creeper and that would help alot. If I do i'll bring the steaks and beer.

Jay The offer to help may not seem like much but to me it would help alot. Not sure how long the back would last by myself.

I will let the three of you know soon. Hopefully tomorrow I can see if the turbo is good or not and get the parts I need. Appreciate it.

Only 20 psi?
I really suspect a boost leak.
Before you take it apart, make something like this and charge the intake with at least 20 psi, try for 22-25, and start looking for a leak.
A spray bottle with soapy water will be very handy.

EDIT: is your wastegate connected and functioning?

Dan I am not sure about the whole wastegate thing. I know where it is but that is one part I have never dealt with. I have always had low boost numbers 1psi @ 70mph+ with cruise on on highway. As a matter fact if I am not pressin on the pedal to increase speed the guage (2nd one diff kind all new line and sensor) I made my own air leak tester with PVC and put 25psi in there with no leaks, of course I didn't use soapy water. If you care to send me a message/pm or post on this thread how to check the wastegate I am all ears.

Also I could not duplicate the smoke today, filled up today and still got 15.34mpg city60%/ highway40% driving

Also I checked the turbo wheel today and it looks fine and did NOT move in and out at all, just a very little side to side which is ok

The way that I have my wastegate adjusted is to disconnect the control rod from the lever on the top of the exhaust housing. Tighten it up a bit and apply compressed air (gently!).
What I am looking for is for the control rod to stay put until 12psi. Then you will see it beginning to open the WG valve, just barely starting to move.
The easiest way to adjust the control rod on the truck is to clamp the threaded rod with a pair of vise grips, then insert a 3" bolt through the hole on the end and use that for leverage.
The gauge setup I use is like this.

Also, I don't remember if you have a Overboost Annihilator or not?
If you don't, you won't get more than about 22-23 psi and the computer will defuel your truck to prevent overboost.

Tom, do you have a tuner or chip? I only see 15 psi tops running basically stock.

The filter is simply a step-down size adapter for the hose diameter.
It doesn't really need to be there, but I needed an adapter for that function and it fit the bill.
