Sprechen sie deutsch??? Ich verstehe nicht spanisch aber verstehe deutsch und englisch. I took spanish for three years in HS, but taught myself German..can't remember any Spanish to save my own ***..and I work with a lot of spanish speaking people. It kills them when they ask me something in spanish and I reply in german.
I took 3 years of Spanish, not Spanglish though. Hell I can barely speak Spanish even after 3 years.
I've heard some very interesting words at work that don't sound like any real language so that could be Spanglish. (Lots of Hispanic persons work here).
I took 4 years of "proper Spanish" in school and got straight A's, but I never used it after that. So now I can order fluently in a Mexican restaurant (if we had one) and communicate on a very basic level with our seasonal crews. (Problem is, they come from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, etc. and everyone has a different dialect.)
Forget ordering in Spanish at Taco Bell, they can't even get English orders right around here. As a long-time Taco Hell junkie, my favorite line is to say "one of everything, to go please. And hold the tomatoes." One guy who knew I was a regular actually started ringing up one of everything, he thought he was being a smart *** but it locked up the register. He had no access key, the manager's key didn't work, and they had to ask all the customers (including us) to order through the drive-up for the next 3 hours while a regional manager came in to fix it.
NH Hottie that's what i call Spanglish. That's how i communicate w/my employees. I know a little Spanish, they know a little English. Some sentences have english and spanish. I use the most spanish i can and what i don't know comes out in english, that way i can at least still use complete sentences.
LOL. Makes for funny conversations.
Also a bad habit to get into. I had a rude awakening last summer when I went to Mexico. And I had to force myself to speak correct Spanish. I got alot of blank stares...
Now for a real challenge. While on my Mexico trip, I went to the Yucatan (which is where my relatives are located), many of the older people speak mostly Mayan. So there I was, trying to understand conversations with a combo of Mayan and Spanish. Needless to say...I was giving the blank stares!
I always thought "spanglish" was when people habitually mixed up languages in normal speech (like foreign bad guys in movies - "That's it, gringo. You gonna die. End of the line, Amigo!") And stuff like that.
I was in Lowe's the other night when the clerk asked the customer, as he handed her his credit card, "Debito y credito?" I turned to my wife and said, "Hey, I'm bilingual!"
Not to be outdone, my wife called my attention to the Giant Roll of Charmin we have, come to find out it's a Rolla Giganta!
Spanglish, TexMex, whatever you want to call it. Dont worry, its only a conspiracy. Everything will be okay, just fill out your Wal Mart application in spanglish.
Gee, That's just to sad that the elders think that their culture is bein ruined. I thought this was America. ENGLISH ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
