Call me crazy, but these things look funny.I can't get any socket to get a grip on them because they have so many grooves. Can someone tell me what type of socket that I need to get these out?I know what it is,but I can't think of the name of them to save my life.Does Wal-Mart have them?
Could you be refering to a Torx head? For tools, I'd suggest Snap On, Mac, or maybe Sears. WalFart, like most discount stores and many auto stores have foreign made tools; the heat treat or alloy of the steel, or both are often lousy and the tool breaks. Not much fun when it's late in the evening.
I used a 12 point socket and have 6k mi on a new head gasket. Broke it in going from LA to Vegas in August, just remember to wire brush the bolts real good, vacuum the rust out of the block bolt holes and tap each hole in the block. Cleaning mine took just as long as wrenching on it.
Thanks guys.My nice neighbor let me borrow some of his Craftsman sockets to get the job done .It turned out to be a 13mm 12-point socket.Yep,it's the Torx head. Thanks Cowboy.I couldn't remember the name .
I ended up breaking 2 of them off,but I got them out a few mintues ago. They were pretty corroded.Vise Grips and a 3lb. sledge can do wonders .
I worked at a major aerospace manufacturer as an Airframe Structual Engineer for many years and saw a few funky bolt heads go by. I really hesitated on the 12-point config since I hadn't seen them on "the road" so I held back on that one. They were "external" and a torx is internal as far as engagement with a wrench goes. At any rate, good to hear all is working out
