I have a 99 F-250, V10, Lariat with all the options including the tow package. I assume it has the 4R100 tranny in it. I filled it with gas a couple of days ago, left the lights on with the ignition off. When I started it, it pulled out fine but was revving to abut 3000 rpm before it would shift and it was a hard shift. It did this until I pulled over, turned the truck off including all lights, and restarted it. It drove normal again after. Yesterday I start it after it had sat for about 4 hrs., pull out of the space and it goes forward but then it just revved w/o any power moving it forward. It was in drive but no shifts, nothing. I stopped it, turned it off and restarted again and it drove normal. Tranny fluid is showing full. Has anyone experienced this problem or know what it could be? Thanks.
Yuck. Intermittant problems are some of the worst to try and diagnose. Has the OD light ever come on during one of these episodes? If so, it'd be a good idea to have the codes read so you know what the computer sees wrong. Otherwise, I'm at a loss for guesses.
Mine did this. It turned out to be a bad speed sensor. I ignored the problem for a few days cuz it was so intermittent then my speedometer started bouncing and eventually would only read speeds above 30mph. Replaced the speed sensor over the rear diff for about $15 and reset the codes (dont know what the codes were cuz at the time I did not have a scanner) and the tranny started shifting fine again.
Maybe it could be a bad speed sensor. My "service engine soon" light turned on yesterday, but the truck still idles ok, pulls hard and nothing else seems out of the ordinary. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and take it in to the shop, if only to get the light turned off.
Yup mine did this exact samething ('99 F250SD) It turned out to be
the Speedometer/ABS sensor on the top of the rear pumpkin. It cost $10 at the dealer and takes 5 minutes to install. Good luck.
One thing you could try before taking it into the shop is re-booting it. Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes and then re-connect it. That should reset your computer. Sometimes, auto start, keyless entry, cell phones or any other rf devices can confuse the computer.
