I was wondering if anyone that has recieved the Dec flash has had any bad side affects like with the OCT?? What kind of milage are you all getting after the DEC flash??/
I got the Dec flash on 12/30. I see a slight improvement in performance mainly due to change in shift points. All the other problems brought on by Oct flash are still there. Decrease fuel mileage, lower acceleration performance (better but not what it was before Oct), vibration at 2000-2250 rpm in floorboards, still louder noise. Also with the Dec flash, my fuel gauge is getting flaky. Filled up at 1/2 tank. Gauge still showed 1/2 tank after turning key back on and starting engine. Returned to full after two starts and about 20 miles.
I was told by my service department that the Dec flash was intended to fix a number of things but not the problems brought on by the Oct flash. That fix is due out Jan, Feb or March.
So far, I've gotten a little better fuel mileage. My gas gauge seems to be more accurate now. I filled up at 1/2 tank and it took almost 15 gallons. Much happier after the flash. My truck is an 8/03 build.
i did not get the oct. flash because i wasnt in form about it, but i did get the dec one just because of the cold idle problem i was having. fuel mileage is up from 15.23 to about 17.1. it doesnt accelerate as good as before, hell at least i dont have that strong odor anymore.
I had mine reflashed DEC 31 and cannot determine the flash from the sticker under the hood. I assume it is the lastest?
Differences that I notice is a distinctive humming noise on cold start up in turbo. Could be from the increased idle from flash upgrade. Goes away once warmed.
Also noticed truck will not start on first try twice since I have had it back from reflash. Dont know what this could be. Happens after following standard starting procedure according to ford manual. I can set there and let it turn over for the longest and it never fires. Then next attempt starts. I do not live in cold weather climate and cant figure it out?????
I took my truck in to the dealer for the Dec. flash. The # of the flash on the invoice is 42 12A650. Does anyone know if this is the correct # for Dec flash? I took my truck in for a rough idle issue. After long runs on the highway, I will pull up to a stop sighn/stop light and the truck will start a rolling/rough idle. This is driving me crazy, anyone else with this issue? I was told that the Dec. flash would solve this issue, not true.............
Just had my 03 Excursion (early 2003) flashed with the latest. Downshifts in Tow/Haul mode are now almost unnoticeable (were really harsh), starts seem "smoother". Haven't had it long enough to know regarding mileage. Don't notice any difference in power. Haven't seen anything bad yet.
I am sorry I had the Dec flash done - seems to have lost power and went from 15.5 mpg to 14.1 (now checked 4 times). No other problems that are commonly reported - just poor mileage and it made it worse!
KurtnJr, What kind of truck do you have? Did you have the Oct flash before this? I had mine at the dealer today and the service writer said the Dec flash did not fix the mileage issue.
Had updated flash (old one was October)... but I am not sure if I got December or January (which somebody said came out)???
Dealer said that their WDS machine is connected at all times via the net for immediate and/or nightly updates from FMC. The service writer and tech did not know which was updated, but whatever one is was done since they update daily from FMC.
Now for the good news....
December (or maybe January)? update has shown the following improvements (or changes) over the October flash.
1) Highway mileage shows 19.0 on overhead computer.
2) Actual mileage vs fuel computed at 20.7 MPG.
(Using #2 winterized with Power Service winter additive for freeze protection and cetane level).
(Outside temp was 32 F to 39F) during driving).
3) Tip-in and Tip-out is firmer with NO lag.
4) Shift points were raised slightly.
5) Idle remained the same, but does slightly run up to 1,000 for cold starts, but drops back down to 600 - 700 RPM's.
6) Idle will raise if temperature drops of idles for a long time. Touch the brake or gas peddal, and RPM's drop back down.
7) A little bit of turbo "wine" is now heard, but not bad - sounds like a 7.3.
All in all, I am very happy with the latest flash (Dec or Jan??). The pro's out-do the cons.
I recommend the latest FLASH!!!!
Good luck to all... Keep Strok'n (I know but I couldn't resist).

Mine is an 04 built in August - regular cab, FX4, automatic. Yes I did have the Oct flash and the Dec flash made things worse. A friend in my office just took delivery of an 04 built in Jan and on his first tank he got 17mpg. We wonder if his 04/04 is running the same flash as my 03/04? I am going to call about a re-flash. I like the truck, however, I bought a truck with pilot injection that got much better mileage and Ford has messed it up!
