Back-up light switch repair
My 1978 Ranger 4x4 switch is mounted on the left side of the transmission. After removing the switch from the transmission, I grinded down the rivets with my Dremel tool and seperated the switch. I found out that the original internal gasket had torn apart, and peices were stuck between the contacts. I cleaned the brass contacts and pulled the springs out just a little bit since the brass rods were worn out. Then relubed the internal switch with grease and fabricated a gasket with a beer box carton. I used a spring loaded punch and drilled a 3/32 hole through the original rivets and used a screw and nuts to secure both sides of the switch together. Then I mounted the switch back on the transmission and the lights worked.
The switch has elongated bolt holes so you can make minor adjustments back and forth. I have read many threads on this subject. I suggest trying to make minor adjustments to the switch while you troubleshoot.
