The old 4.3 might be much less but if it is a vortec 4.3 a 4.0 does not stand a chance .I had a 97 gmc jimmy with a vortec 4.3 and my buddy had a ranger with a 4.0 . form a dead stand still side by side i would leave him 3 cars links on take off those 4.3 vortecs are some bad little motors and this is coming from me and i hate a gm product !
wel i have to tell you man the 4.3 will lose in a straight up race everytime..... my room mate has a 2003 S-10zr2 with a 4.3.. and i blow him away everytime we race. Those motors only generate about 190hp.... and stock the 4.0 generates 207. so you do the math.
I don't know...I've driven some 4.3s that were incredibly fast, a lot quicker than the 4.0. Hey, I'm Ford through-and-through, but credit given where credit deserved.
I too have driven some quick 4.3's as well... I am just saying from what have seen from my room mate's s-10 i am not impressed what so ever with the new ones.
ive not driven either of the "new" versions of either motor, but i once had an '87 astro with the 4.3 t.b.i. and my currant ranger is the pre-o.h.c. 4.0 i liked the astro motor better as far as power output , but it was terrible to do any work on.( and being a g.m. product, it always needed something) the 4.0 seems to be better on fuel usage, and is a lot smother at idle. would be neat to compare similar cassis/driveline setups. my comparison isnt to equal considering im comparind a auto van versus a manual truck.
I dont know much about the 4.0 but a friend of mine has a 01 extreme with the 4.3 vortec and that little truck moves. He hasnt done much performance wise besides air filter and a few small things, but i have seen him run consistent 16.0's in the 1/4 mi. Thats the fastest near stock 4.3 I have seen at the track.
