project mud beast
8.8" Fords are not "peanut butter axles". they are almost on par with a 9", except for a few things (ie c-clips, and smaller ring gear). A lot of mustang racers upgrade them with 33 spline axles and c-clip eliminators and push over 450HP with slicks.
Dana 44s have proven themselves, especially in TTB. They have proven with a locker and 35s they will be spitting u-joints and inter-stub axles if you get to mean with them.
Don't get me wrong, I think the 9 is a great axle. My point is that if you want to spend $1000 on getting one and upgrading it to sterling 10.25" strength, why bother when you can spend $300 bux for a sterling?
btw, 12bolt chevy are about a small step up from a 10bolt. For the same price you can get a 14bolt.
Its not my project, but most serious mudders I see have 44s, 1ton axles, and generally 1ton trucks with big motors..
However, a 9" w/ 38s would do if all he is putting on is a cab, a motor and wheels, as long as he doesn't have a 600HP blown 460.
