As a 26 year man myself I have some well founded thoughts on this based on a single question; Why are you going in?
If your joining only because your told to, join any branch because your only going to get out of the experience what you put in - probably the air force is the least stressful in this regard.
If your married with young kids and your spouse is poorly educated or not a total self starter and completly independent kind of person from you, stay away from the marine corps & Navy because you can expect remote or at sea duty assignments where your family IS NOT allowed to accompany you or in may cases even visit. Neglected wives and families are a drain on everyones energy and a PIA for the chain-of-command.
The other side of this coin is the Air Force which probably has the highest quality of family life of any of the services.
Consider your after service situation too. You can learn a great deal of technical stuff in all branches but some simply isn't transferable to the civilian side or there are so many skilled heavy equipment drivers you can't find work after driving a tanker truck for four years.
Me.....I spent 5 years in the Corp (some of it in Force Recon) and 20 years in the Army (some of it with the Rangers). I had a hell of a ride and a number of painful falls too. But, I'd do it again, only differently.
I served in the Army (anti-aircraft, shooting them down) and in the Marine Corps Reserve in a fighter squadron (keeping them flying). If I had it to do again, it would be Marine air.
Dono
my gramps was a marine, only because he drew the short straw between his three other brothers. They all served in WW2. I was told he was in the Phillipines and Iwo Jima.
Thats where I would go if I had a choice, I would love to be a cold weather troop. I guess I don't realyl know what they are called, btu I saw it on the discovery channel, and I have a lot of cold weatehr survival and camping experience.
I voted Navy. Spent 6 years. Father retired. He's been collecting that check for over 25 years. Wish I would have been smart enough to retire like him. I would have retired a couple of years ago with a nice check. Oh well, life in the city.
I don't really have a preference so I just went with the Navy, since I like to watch JAG. But God bless all of our armed forces, they keep us safe and need our support.
