In case anyone cares. Replaced the accelerator cable today. Part cost $89 plus tax at Ford and took a couple of days to come in. It took about an hour with more than half the time spent taking the old one out. Getting the plastic cover off from around the throttle body was a bit troublesome. And getting the cable loose from the firewall took a bit of work. The cable does into the firewall from the engine side and there are a couple of plastic ears that catch on the inside, I was able to get a screwdriver in and dislodge one ear and then used a big punch and hammer to knock it loose.
Installation was pretty easy once you can see how things go together. Insert pedel end through the firewall making sure to line up the notch, it kind of snaps into place once you get it lined up right. After that just slip the pedal end of the cable in place and attach the throttle end and put the rest of the pieces back.
