I just bought a 87' Bronco 4x4 Full size, and it was in an accident becuase the guy said he didnt have any brakes. When I took off the front tires I saw that he had no pad left and it was metal to metal, the disk is grinded to ****** and the piston was grinded down a bit too. My question is can I buy a jsut a piston because the caliper is good. And I'm also wondering if theres any tricks to figuring out where I could find a hole in the line if there is one after I've got the brakes set up and bled. Before I took the tire off to reveal the pads, I filled the reservoir up with fluid and puimped the brakes and I could feel that it wasnt holding fluid in the line. By taking a closer look I figured out it was pissin out near the brake caliper on ONE side? Do u think the line is bad or if the caliper is shot? I looked at the line near the tire and it appears to be ok. Thanx for any help guys!!
Try looking on AutoZone.com or Napa.com. If neither one of those have just the piston you probably aren't going to find it. I actually had the same thing happen, the pad seperated from the backing and I ended up trashing a rotor. The leak sounds like the seals probably got trashed. Have someone else push on the brake so you can see where it's leaking from and that should narrow it down. If it were me I'd probably be looking for a new caliper assembly, I don't mess around when it comes to brakes.
You would be better off to replace the calipers and everything else ,as it probably overheated them if it was metal to metal. As faras the leak, brake fluid is pretty easy to see when it leaks,If you have rear drum brakes, pull the cups back on the wheel cyls. and see if its wet, if it is replace them. Good luck Mush
You can get piston replacements. You prolly was loosing fluid from when the pistons were damaged. if you lose the seals to the pistons, then fluid will drool out pretty quickly.
As for the calipers, take one with you when you go for the new pistons and compare them to a new one. But another thing to look for is the cylinder walls that the pistons were in. If they are scored or damaged, then you will need to get new calipers anyway.

You could save a few bucks on the calipers if you replace them.
after all the brakes only stop you. if i were you i would replace the calipers with rebuilt ones. yes you can get pistons but is it really worth it? rotors are fairly inexpencive so i would replace them also. a few hundred dollars is alot cheaper than a funeral whether it be yours or someone elses. imagine the guilt if you crashed someone and you survived and they did not. in my opinion dont cheap out on the brakes. you probably got a good deal on the bronco so just spend a few extra dollars so you have reliable braking power. sorry to sound so gloomy but dont want to see anyone get hurt.
how good are everyones brakes on there broncos here mine dont slow me up that good i was wondering if there is a new brake upgrade for under 1000 for broncos
