When I was a wee lad, our next door neighbor's daughter had a boyfriend with a red 68 KR convertible. Tan top, black interior. I can remember going for several rides in that brute with Rhonda and the BF (Can't remember his name--just remember being upset when she broke up with him! No more rides in the Beast! )
My list of favorite Fords:

1989 Merkur XR4Ti--Pretty much has it all, performance, handling, and comfort
1990 F150--Has only left me once (bad starter); I'd definitely have another one

I think you mean the 427 side oiler/428SCJ. They evolved from the FE family of engines (1958). Also called long-shirt (the block/heads are 'high' when you look into the engine compartment). They (427) were in the Shelby Cobras (and trucks until the mid-70's). The block had oil passages on the side of the block (dry-sumped on a Cobra).
They were replaced by the 385 family. This big block was introduced in 1968 on the T-bird and big cars and then 68 1/2 on the Mustang. [428CJ]
One of the fastest of the 385 family is the 429SCJ [mechanical cam, 11.5:1 comprssion, etc.
The oil system is like today's [at the bottom of the block]. It has been bored and stroked to 460 and above.
You can find several books on the Ford big blocks (as well as Ford small blocks). It makes great reading on a winter day.
