My 1999 Ford Explorer occasionally streams a bit of smoke that escapes through the hazard lights. This only seems to happen on hot days and when I have my turn signal hit left. Some times my left turn signal gets stuck and doesn't make the blinking noise. My brothers 1999 Explorer also started to smoke from the exact same place. I took it to the dealership and they took apart the steering column and said they could not find anything wrong. It only smokes on really hot days when my Explorer has been sitting outside.

Gray somke sounds like an electrical problem and should be fixed. If 2 of you have had the same problem, then hopefully there are others on the forum familiar with the problem. I would not ignore the problem.
Definitely the multi-function switch in the steering column. I think you can get them for about $50. There might have been a recall on this. Check with your dealer. If you replace it yourself be sure to disconnect the battery to prevent unintentional air bag deployment.
