high boys

I searched this forum for all high boy threads and found a few conflicts. So...as much as I hate to ask an old question, here goes:

I have found a '78 F250 Supercab 4x4 that the owner swears is a high boy. I have aways believed that 1977 was the last year of high boys. Is he right? It has a 400, auto, married transfer case, and he says it has Dana 60's front and rear.

I am probably going to buy the truck regardless of wether it is a high boy or not, I am just curious.

No, it is NOT a "highboy". Not remotely.

Since the term "Highboy" is not a factory term, I suppose that he could call it whatever he wants. As long as he has put a lift on it to make it "high". Just kidding. What we all here, so affectionately call a highboy, is a pre mid 77 f250 4x4. Plain and simple.
Sounds like a nice truck though.
Have fun in your new ride.

that is not true. while most hiboys have divorced transfer cases, trucks ordered with full time 4 wheel drive got mated transfer cases. a supercab is automatically not a highboy as they were not available until after the frame change in mid 77. the hiboy got its nickname due to the frame design which was different than regular trucks and was discontinued part way through the 77 model year. the hiboys can easily be identified by the ladder frame design which is a few inches narrower than other ford trucks. this means that many components that bolt to the frame are different. the most obvious is the bed as the mounting bolts are closer together. hawkrod

just putting my 2 cents in. I've seen a 1976 F-250 with NP-203 that was divorced.

Is the ladder frame design stronger then?

I am trying to think why they would use the narrower frame on these trucks.

Is the rear axle narrower from wms to wms as well?

I have searched but not found enough information.

yes, most are divorced but not all. for some reason there are a few with mated units before the 77 1/2 model. and to answer the other question about the frames, it goes back to the 60's when it was designed to use existing componentry. the basic ladder frame design was used on all straight axle trucks including 2 wheel drives from about 65 on and they were narrow to clear tires on hard turns especially with the old big F350's hawkrod
