When I bought my truck, ('71 f-100, 300-6, 3 on tree) the lady mentioned that sometimes when she would turn off the truck, that the engine would keep running for a few seconds before it shuts off. (& jump like a horsey)
And now that I finally got my truck working, I noticed she's right.
What would cause this? How can I fix this?
It doesn't happen every time I turn the truck off, but i'm starting to get embarrassed when it does it at work.
Sometimes carbon builds on the pistons causing hot spots which will ignite unspent gas in the combustion chamber. The solution is clean the piston tops. I would try the easiest and cheapest methods first. TC
95% of the time an engine tends to run on is because the curb idle is too high. I would almost bet if you set the idle to factory specs it will quit dieseling or run-on. Carbon or hot spots could cause it but that is much less likely. If the timing was causing it, then it would have to be out far enough that it was running poorly.
I spoke to a mechanic friend yesterday and he believes that it's the carb idle too high. I didin't get a chance to work on the truck over the weekend but I'll try tonight.
BTW
The truck runs good and it's a new carb, but a few months ago I had aother problem and a few guys & I messed with the screws on the carb. Also, when the truck is running it smells too much like gas.
I'll keep you all posted on the progress.
Thanks,
TA
i have been having the same thing with my truck for quite a while, i thought it was something bad, and my dad had said that it was dieseling and there was nothing wrong with it, i couldnt fix it, and it didnt hurt my motor, my idel is good, i havent checked my timeing, but it is EXETREMELY embaressing, i havent done the clutch dump yet but i did one time take it up to about 1500 and turned it off, and it made quite of a show with flames and loud back fires
if you have a stick, then putting a slight load before turning it off works great, i did it yesterday, i just let off the clutch a little, and it turned off perfect
