I have a 1990 F250 that I love. I think the E4OD trans on the 460 gas burner is about to crater. Sometimes I pull a 10,000 # trailer. I avoid pulling in OD when not on straight away interstates at decent speeds (60-65mph). Twice the tranny has barffed out fluid, and the last time it was burnt. I guess I will have to have the tranny replaced at the Bossier City, La Dealer to get the 3 YR, 36,000 warantee. I need warantee because I am on the road and need to have a Ford dealer to fix the darn thing next time it" craters".. Any Ford Truck Enthusiasts out there have any helpful hints about what this old feller should do?? Thanks, Luke Stetson,
I have the same set up, just a '94. I drive in OD all the time, and pull a 9000 lb trailer. Never had a problem. The tranny makes all the decisions. According to the manual this is OK>
If you pull that much you need to have that tranny build strong. Have any shop that builds Deisel trucks and they shoud be able to recommend the right mods to make it last. If they can make these trannys last behind 1200 lbs deisles then your 460 is no problem.
the e4od has gone thrue a lot of changes, If you decied to have it rebuilt it will inclued all the updates and be a better tranny then you started with.
Thanx Ford Folks!!Lotsa Good info...Think I'll let the local Ford dealership look at it and see what the $ may be for a fix/replacement. When on the Road, dealership guarantees beat local fixes on the side of the road!!
They will give you the run around and screw you badly. An independent mechanic will get you the best deal and he is qualified to do the work right, the first time. If it sounds like I have bad experience at a dealer, tis because I have, I was quoted $754 for a torque convertor for a C6.
