My 2002 diesel Excursion was towed back to the dealer again for dying on the road. The service writer blames it on geling. No fuel in the fuel bowl. After insisting on talking to the mechanic he told me that he has seen some of these come in with ice forming on the fuel pump in the tank. After talking to Ford, they are now putting a fuel tank heater in tomorrow, free of charge. They say a service bulletin just came out on this. Just some info.
The heater you're getting is not an in-tank heater, its a heater installed at the engine to increase the temperature of the fuel being returned to the tank in order to increase the overall fuel temperature of the bulk fuel in the tank. This will NOT help on extreme cold weather cold starts after sitting overnight, the fuel could still gell up in the tank overnight.
There is no in tank fuel pump on the O2's. Just run some Power Service anti-gell or Stanadyne and don't worry about it. Or, there is some other reason, could be several things, that the fuel bowl is empty.
My problem is not starting. This truck will start every time. I have never pluged it in at night. My problem starts when I have been driving the truck. It has happened once when I have been driving it for over 2 hours and once when I was driving it over an hour. I talked to them again today and they say they are putting a heater in the tank.
let me know what they end up using. I'm not finding anything from Ford that goes in the tank, I'd be interested to see what it actually is. I've had several in this week that have gelled and if there is an in-tank heater, I want to know about it.
I have to clarify my last post. The service writer is the one that told me about the tank heater. It could be a line return heater. He really is as dumb as a rock about diesels. I will talk to the mechanic on Monday.
