take me to school

Can somebody explain to me what horsepower is and how it works and what it does, and the same wiith torque??? I have a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4x4, I believe i have 210-horsepower overhead-cam 4.0-liter V6 and 250 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm (i got this off of a website, does it sound correct?) Thanks for your help I'm just really interested in this stuff and I have no clue what it does.

The term horsepower was invented by James Watt in the 1700's. He used the power developed by horses in coal mines to figure. A horse exerting 1 hp can raise 330lbs of coal in a minute. A dynamometer measures hp by placing a load on the motor at different rpms and measures torque then you convert it torque to hp by using this formula TorquexRPM/5252=hp 250x4000/5252=190hp Your trucks hp will peak at 190 at 4000 rpms. Torque is a force that causes the motor to rotate. The only time torque is produced is on the power stroke of the engine. A diesel engine has alot more torque and turns less rpm's than a gas motor. The more torque and rpm's a motor can produce the more hp you get which is a good thing. Maybe this will help you understand.
