On my 94 f-150 i pull the 4x4 lever back and the light comes on but there is a clicking noise like in the auto locking hubs not engaging properly or something. are my hubs going out or is there something to adjust? thanks for any help.
It sounds like your hubs are going out. You can check the hubs a couple of ways, 1 is by getting into loose gravel or dirt and engage 4x4 and see if the front tires engage or 2 by putting all 4 wheels on jack stands and let the truck idle in drive with 4x4 engaged and see if the front tires turn. You might also want to check axle u-joints front driveshaft joints. If you find the hubs are bad I would suggest going with manual lockouts, I find them more durable. Ihope this helps in anyway.
I think that pickups like yours with the manual t-case and automatic hubs must be brought to a complete stop in order to allow hubs to engage. I says this in the owner's manual. I changed the crappy pushbutton system to a lever and it clicked when I engaged the 4X4 while moving.I think that the electronic transfer cases slowly speed up the driveshaft so the hubs will cleanly engage, while manuals do not. I have just changed the auto hubs to manual on my pickup.
If you have an on the fly system all the wheels must be turning at the same speed or you will hear the clicking sound. With a manual engagement system I believe the truck must be stopped. With on the fly the two seperate drive systems must be turning at the same speed (no back tires spinning) or it will not engage properly as the systems will be out of sync with each other. Better to engage before you begin slipping or sliding. If you have the owners manual I would reference it and go with the details supplied. Manufacturer knows best.
