I have a 92 explorer with a A4LD tranny. If I put it into gear it will only go about a foot. Could this be a shift sensor problem or some thing bigger? Also how hard is it to rebuild it yourself? I have a mechanical back ground but never messed with a automatic tranny.
More information would help. Does it quit pulling and the motor revs like you are in neutral? Does it quit pulling and feels like it has bound up? Is that all gears (R, OD, D, 2, 1)?
I do not recommend you try to rebuild it yourself. Besides the specialty tools required, it takes a lot of experience to be able to identify worn or damaged parts. Also, the A4LD is not the easiest transmission to get right. I get alot of them in my shop that have been hacked up by shade trees. If you get it wrong, it can ruin a lot of expensive parts very quickly.
Find yourself a reputable shop and pay them to do the job. You will be better off in the long run.
