I am rebuilding volare clip in my 56 F100 big window and need to find a supplier for the ball joint socket needed for removing the screw in type ball joints. I think the correct size is 3/4 by 1 29/32". Does anyone know who supplies this particular socket for less than $50??
Big honkin pipe wrench and just a little heat to preserve the threads in the A-arm. The threads like to gall on the removal sometimes. You save forty bucks on a tool you honestly don't need. Large crescent wrench works even better.
Thanks for the help. I used a 24" crescent wrench on the top ball joint but the clearance was so close that I couldn't get a good bite on it. I did finally get it out but I was hoping for an easier way. You are probably right so maybe I'll just grin an bear it.
There are some non-traditional pipe wrenches that may work better in the tight clearance. I'm not a plumber so I can't recite the names. Still a better investment than a socket that will rot in your tool box.
I used a pipe wrench also. The problem was that I could only turn it about 10 degrees before hitting the control arm. Took about 2 hours and 4 busted knuckles.
I ended up taking the second one to the machine shop to have them turn it out. It might be the best $10 I've spent.
Had mine done at my local NAPA store and even they didn't have the tool, but they bought one to do my ball joints rather than turn down the job. I didn't do it myself because I didn't want to take a chance screwing up my control arms...and I don't need any more busted knuckles. It was money well spent...
I scoured the net trying to find a cheap(er) ball joint socket since I have 3 other buddies all installing Volare clips in various rides.
The best deal was a 3/4 by 17/8" for $23. Volare is 3/4 by 1 29/32
(a 32nd to small). My neighbor has a Bridgeport mill and sez he can shave that 32nd off. What the hell, for $23 maybe I'll go for it! Thanks to all for your help and advice. Keep wrenching!!
