Are there any late model seats that will "bolt in" or fit in the
'73-79 regular cab trucks well? I'm wanting to swap in a lightning bench seat as it has a fold down console, is able to fit 3 people, but the drivers seat is still like a bucket seat. Really What I want is something that has side bolsters to hold me in better when cornering. I would go for full on buckets too if I cannot find a bench type seat that I like or that is reasonable. Will the current lightning seat work in my truck?
Thank you,
Nick
The only bolt in swap is any Ford pickup seat up to '96 that has a solid one piece bottom (bench seat - no split in middle). Mine came out of a '91 XLT and has a fold down center armrest and is contoured like buckets. Just remove old seat, put old adjustment rails on new seat and bolt new seat in. Took me about 20 minutes.
With some fabrication skills, you can make most any seat fit. Keep in mind that when you put buckets in an older regular cab, you loose some legroom. Search the past posts - seat swaps have been discussed in detail many times in the past.
Nick, Check your local wrecking yard for seats. Price all depends on what you want and who's selling it. I've seen a lot of guys get seats in the $50 range but I can't find anything decent in town for under $400. Then again I'm picky. You should also check ebay. There are a lot of seats there, bucker and split bench styles. Just double check the price on shipping before you bid!
Okay, since we're on the seat topic. Has anyone used the 80's Bronco seat frame to install buckets in their truck? It's hard to find nice buckets that flip forward (for my Supercab) but I was thinking I might be able to adapt a mechanism from the Bronco and have my whole seat flip up and forward. What do you guys think?
79F150TX,
I paid $150 for my '91 seat, it was in great shape, no signs of wear. I actually gained some leg room with the '91 seat - the old seat was all the way back and the '91 seat is 1 setting forward. It's much, much more comfortable than the old seat.
ivanribic,
I believe there was a past post (by Hawkrod if I remember correctly) stating that the floor shape of a supercab is the same as a bronco. He installed 78-79 Bronco seats and mounts into his supercab and only had to drill a couple new holes. Try a search.
