I own a '94 Ranger w/a 2.3L I-4. The check engine light comes on after 2 or 3 minutes. The light may or may not stay on. This has just started in the last 2-3 weeks. Also the truck just passed the emmissions test. the truck has 96k miles on it.
Welcome to FTE rollback. Have you visually inspected for loose/damaged hoses and electrical connections in the engine compartment? After this, I'd say it's time to pull codes. Many parts suppliers will do this for free in hopes of your buying part(s) from them.
I had this problem on mine (4.0L) back in 95 with not even 10K on the clock. The dealer thought it was an O2 sensor that was at one end or the other of it's acceptable limits but would not replace the part. I solved the problem by using one bottle of STP super concentrated fuel system cleaner at every oil change (3,000 miles). Keep this thought on the backburner; personally I'd do what was mentioned in my first paragraph first.
I had the same type of thing recently with my 98. The CEL would come on for a while and then go off. I had a heck of a time with it, every time I'd head to a parts store to get the codes pulled the CEL would go off. I finally got it and it ended up being insufficient airflow, I had a little mud on the air filter. Also when I had my emissions test done it showed the codes that were present when it was done, double check your emissions readout it may be on there.
