You might have the same problem I experienced. In the metal pipe running from the rear fender to the gas tank, there is a plastic tube which is slid into a sort of metal sleeve. This tube runs directy into the tank. It is possible that this tube might have a kink in it or something else. I ended up dropping the entire tank and finally found that was the problem. You might just want to drop the tank; if the tube is not kinked or bent just snoop around some more. You'll eventually find the problem source.

I have the same problem. I can't figure it out. I have a 91. I have metal peice on the fender that goes into a rubber hose. and i dont' see any kinks. I jsut think that it doesn't vent fast enough for some of these high flow pumps. I would like to find a away to have bigger vents.

I think there is something wrong in your filler tube. My 91 fills completely full before the pump ever kicks off. I have trouble putting more in to get to an even dollar amount without overflowing.
