Tire siping

Siping, not Sipping or Sniping or even Snipping.

Anyone have any experience with this and whether or not it actually does anything for winter driving?

My '00 Ranger just got a new 4 pair of Wildcat AT's and because of the traction problem in Spokane and the fact that Washington State might just outlaw studded tires I went ahead and had the tires siped as recommended. I can't feel any difference myself, I can't see how cutting lines in the tread will improve my traction on ice and snow by 20%.

Is that whole thing just an attempt to part me with an extra 30 bucks (it worked if it was) does anyone else have their tires siped and have any positive experiences with it?

Only heard that it helps. Allows the rubber to flex and grab a little more. After the big snow you just had, maybe the idiots will let you keep studded tires. I think that most of the new snow tires probably don't need it; they do a lot of testing on those things. Don't hold me to it!

Siping

I take it that siping is a relatively new thing.

I couldn't really tell if the siping helped at all after that huge snowstorm we had here in Seattle a couple days ago. There was a substantial amount of compact snow and ice on the roads for a day or so and while I wasn't slip sliding away, I did live in Spokane for a long time and snow and ice aren't new to me.

I guess I'll assume that since I wasn't sliding off the road the siping must have helped to some degree. Sure wish I could quantify it though...

Actually it isn't new, almost all of the M&S tires have some siping.

Yep, that is correct you didn't slide off the road due to the siping, it pushes the water away from the tires and helps it from hydroplaning.

Siping has been around for quite awhile and it does help with traction on any kind of surface. Its also been said that it could extend tire tread life .

Sipping has been around for a very long time. I've used when I was racing. What you are really doing is artifically softening your tire compond. The more sipping that is done the softer the tire will feel and provide better traction. But to much and the tire will wear much faster.
