I have a 2003 F-250 SD crew cab 6' bed with a tool box. I 'm considering purchasing a bed extender. There are times when I could use that couple of extra feet when hauling . How well do they work and most of all, do they have a lock on them? My concern would be theft. What type is a good quality for my money?
thanks, MP
I think they just latch in, and no lock. I know what you mean with a toolbox taking space, I hate it, but love it at the same time. But those extenders are hella money!!
Yup same thing. Also, how often do you haul stuff. Would it be too hard to remove the box? then reattach it, when done? Well just a thought..... But After hunting is over with, back goes the tonneau cover.
I also have the short box on my 250. I knew before I bought the truck that I wanted the bed extender. I did pretty much looking around on the internet and the best deal I could find was at Cabellas. It works great!
Installation was easy. They provide you with a cut out template and you drill 3 holes on each side of the box. Then install the brackets with self tapping sheet metal screws. You can piviot the cage in or out as I'm sure you've seen in the ads. To take the cage on or off you piviot it halfway (straight up) and pull out. This is the only way to remove it and the tailgate needs to be down to do this. So locking you tailgate will prevent theft of the cage.
I used to take mine out and use it when I need it but this got old and I just leave it in. Still looks brand new. If for some reason you do need to use all of the 6 3/4 of the bed the bed extender would get in the way. Just take it off and put it in the bed facing the other way.
Great product, but expensive. If you still have questions I'll be more specific.
