I installed one of those auxilary brake lights into my trailer hitch. It plugs into the four pin connector. It works except it flashes in unison with the rt turn signal as well as with the hazard flashers. It doesn't do it with the left turn signal. It flashes with the rt turn signal and flashers whether or not the brake is activated. Could the Ford boys have wired my four pin connector incorrectly? Any ideas? Thx

Test your plug receptacle with a test light to be sure.
The factory wiring consists of people plugging harnesses together.
It's possible that a section of harness is bad, but rare.
Check to make sure the harness from the plug to the main wiring group
is fully connected.
Is the hitch light supposed to flash too?
Generally any center mount light should only be stop/tail, or just a stop lamp.
How many wires does it have going to the plug?
Is there a green and yellow wire? Those are your right, and left turn signals respectively.
There are two wires coming out of this little stop light, one green and one white. They plug into ground and the stop light circuit. I put a voltmeter on the four pin connector on the truck. When I activaye the left turn signal voltage reads normal. When I activate the right turn signal I'm getting voltage at the turn signal pin as well as the stop light pin, and vice versa. When I hit the brake I'm getting voltage at the brake light pin as well as the turn signal pin....wowww. I'm gonna crawl under and check the harness connections. If anybody has any other ideas let me know and I'll let ya all know what I find underneath. Thx.
Hmmmn...Me thinks; Try this. You need to isolate where the current is feeding back.
Unplug the trailer wire harness at the point that it connects to the main harness. Check the main (the one that leads to both of the lights in the bed) and see if it does the same thing there. I'm assuming your lights on the truck are working properly because you haven't yet mentioned it.
Since you've discovered that power is getting to the brakes, then the opposite is probably true. Your brake light shows up in the right turn signal. use your brake pedal and see if the right turn indicator lights up in the dash.
Hopefully, you just have the right turn wire pulled loose at the trailer receptacle, and it's laying on the brake light pin.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Sep-02 AT 05:53 PM (EST)]I pulled the trailer harness out of the main plug and metered the voltages at the main line. Same problem. I got turn signal voltage on the stop light circuit. Now I'm aggravated. Problem has to be where the wires are connected somewhere else that run to this trailer harness, I just don't know where. I even took the harness apart to make sure all the splices looked right going from the seven pin to the four pin and they look fine. It's not the harness. I really don't want to have to take this to the dealer. By the way, the truck lights operate fine.
I also have one of those hitch stop lights. While I haven't checked it with this truck, when installed on my '93 F150, it also flashed when one of the turn lights was on. I chauked it up to a wierd light and didn't worry about it since it didn't seem to hurt anything and the brake light did work. (I also had only two wires that plugged in)

does your flasher circuit work correct without anything else on ?
there are 2 relays used to control the trailer tow circuits they are located in the engine compartment, a small black box towards the firewall
do you have a trailer you can plug into this circuit to test the wiring.

I have the manuals /wiring diagrams for the truck if you need refernce to something.
Everything on the trk seems to operate properly, flasher circuit, etc. Maybe it's just this made in Taiwan stop light, I don't know. It just seems strange to me that I get voltage at the brake light pin with the rt turn signal on. If anyone has the time and a voltmeter could you chk yours out, the 4 pin connector, that is and see if ya get the same thing? Ground pin is the bottom, white male. The brake light pin is the top pin, green wire. Thx guys for all of the responses. I'm also gonna hook up to a trailer and see what happens.

One is ground, one is tail(running lights) the other 2 are rt turn/brake and lf turn/brake. The Superdutys don't use an amber turn signal light so the turn signal and brakes share the same wireing. There is no brake light only wire. Test this. With just the brakes on, both wires should be hot. With just turn signals, only one should flash. With brake and turn signal, one should flash and one should just be hot. If you are trying to get a hot line with just the brakes then tap into the 3rd brake light wire. On Camper pkgs it's under the truck somewhere.

Paul.....you are absolutely correct!! ......and I feel like a real DUMMY. I should have realized this. Thank you and the others that helped me out. You guys are the best Thanks again.
