93 4x4 3L standard tranny clutch has never been replaced., ongoing problem that comes and goes. when i shut off the engine i hear a pounding sound from the engine compartment. it starts very low then gets louder then just goes away fast. by the time i get out of the cab its dies down and hard to trace. it did this several yrs ago but a very short time. i now have 200k on it. i just replaced the water pump n hoses. it startred 2 days ago. when driving i hear a faint noise and when i stop at a lite i can hear a faint pounding. when i shut it off it sounds like someone has a big rubber hammer and is hitting the engine
Welcome to FTE guy437.
Maybe if you had a helper placed outside the truck to pinpoint the sound as soon as you shut it off, you could take turns narrowing it down.
For the price of a new rad cap, it wouldn't hurt. You may want to try to burp the cooling system just so that you know it has been done.
you guy's are great....stepman was right on...there was fresh spilage out of the overflow bottle onto the inner fender well. seems it was coming from the small hose that goes to the neck of the radiator below the cap...damm and i made a mental note to replace it when they did the water pump the stepman...
now dealford..sounds like ure right too...its sounds like air in a home radiator...used to live in germany as a army brat...i knew that sound was familiar...so how do i bleed the radiator?
thx guys, you just saved me a whole bunch of money
When the engine is cold, take the rad cap off. Top up the rad then start the engine and let it come up to operating temp. Keep the rad topped up as you go. There will be some spillage so put a drain pan under the rad area. By keeping the rad topped up, the air pockets will be displaced by coolant as the system circulates.
ok, thx...will do.. its on my list for tomarrow..cause when i stop it sounds like heck..i will be back with the results...and no doubt some more help as this rig is gettin old
