Ocassional Starting Problem

Sometimes when I try to start my 1996 2.3L Ranger, the engine turns over and starts long enough for me to realize that it's time to let go of the key, but as soon as I do, it dies. I can do this over and over.

It finally starts when I give it gas and let go of the key at the same time. Kind of like an air intake needs to be punched open by the higher RPM's. Once it's started, no more stalling.

Has anyone else experienced a similar startup problem? It might be a coincidence, but it seems to happen most often when it's raining (usually also a 10-15 degree drop in temp this time of year) and when it's been only an hour or three since I've driven the truck.

It has the indication of carb icing, however that usually only happens after the engine has run for a while. Then if you let it sit for 5 mins or so it will start right up. Hard to believe that is the problem, but you might just check the hoses. Other possibilities:
1. Loose or faulty electrical connections at the distributor, coil or alternator.
2. Fuel or electrical systems.
3. Vacuum leak at intake manifold or throttle body. Check all hoses and put a vacuum guage on the engine.
