ignition actuator

Does anyone know how the get the ignition actuator back in when replacing it? I got the broken one out but can't get the new one back in on a 1991 ford f-150 4x4. Does the tilt steering separate?

I have done this on my 89 and it teaches patience. Well worth it since taking it to a dealer or repair shop will set you back about 300.

Yes, the column comes apart. I believe the hinge pins pop out with force and everything else is pretty much self explanatory, with patience. I just propped the column in a vise and went at it.

Let me know how it goes...

Yes, you have to "separate" the column. Look on each side and you'll see the two threaded pivot pins. I found 2 machine screws in my parts box that fit them, hopefully you can too. Once the screws are in, you can just pry under the screwhead and pop the pins out. Be sure too hold onto the column outer piece so it won't pop you in the teeth when it comes loose. It's spring loaded, but not really dangerously so. Nice to have a third hand here, especially when re-installing and trying to line the pins up.
Take a good look at how the ratchet mechanism underneath looks. When you reinstall, the ratchet tends to drop under its hook while you are wrestling the pins back in. It's possible to put it back together only to find you have to undo it again to pull the ratchet back up on top of its hook where it belongs.
Doable by yourself, but nicer with a helper. I've never pulled a column out to do this, I just take out the bolts holding it to the dash and let it rest on the seat and/or my lap. It goes a lot quicker that way.

OK...I know exactly where you are talking about GypsyR. My question with this is that there are three allen nuts on the back. Do these need to be taken out as well? this is on a 89 f250. The two threaded pins is on each side, at the bottom there is a pin that goes through the "gear teeth section for the tilting mechanism. Does that need knocked out as well? thanks with any help.

In my case, I had taken those 3 allen nuts out. In the end, I am not sure it helped. Although it gave a little more 'wiggle' room. I spent 2 hours trying to put the whole thing back together. I can tell you that it didn't *hurt* to take those 3 allen nuts off, however by that time I was ready to bolt the darn steering column back up and just keep it a 'screwdriver' start truck.

To get that replacement hooked piece back in, it took a little wiggling, that is for sure. Keep at it. It will go in. The next hard part is going to keep that pin in the hole and lined up while putting it all back together.

Then of course getting the cylinder lock to mesh with the teeth.
I am lucky in the fact that I have a '86 cutlass cierra 4 door (runs good) outside my garage I do not care about and anytime I need to burn off some steam, I just step out and kick that a few times....

Keep at it but don't try and force it. That piece seems to be made of tin, and I would hate to hear you had to buy another.
