Does anybody else think that the head rest is leaning too far forward? The head rest can not be tilted back or turned around. If you tilt the seat back your chin will be in your chest. How can a person take a nap in the passenger side with the head rest that way? Poor design.
I always got a stiff neck in all my other vehicles because when I sat up up straight (so I could see where I was going) my head wouldn't rest against the headrest. I swore that wouldn't happen in my next vehicle.
With the 2004 F-150, my head snugs right against the headrest when I drive. I'm much more concerned with driving than taking a nap. The headrest is absolutely perfect for me.
I'm about to rip out the '04 XLT headrests because they cause me to lean forward at the neck like the first guy Labrador mentions in his post. I tried to remove them completely but they won't come out so I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to ask them how to do it. If they don't come out (federal regulations, etc) then out comes the reciprocating saw and off they go. A terrible design flaw, in my opinion because in addition to the bad angle, the person in the rear seat cannot see anything in front because the headrests block too much of the view. You can get claustrophobic sitting for very long in the rear.
There is a button on each headrest post. Both buttons need to be pressed while the headrest is lifted out. You almost need 3 hands. The button on the inboard post is kind of hidden... it doesn't stick out like the outboard button so it's kind of hard to notice it.
Also, if you have an extended cab you can try the rear seat headrests on the front seats. If you like them let me know I may be able to get you some extras.
I have a Lariat with the leather captain's chairs and I haven't noticed the headrests being too far farward. I tilted my seat all the back one day and crashed out waiting for my wife to come out of the store. Very comfy, I thought.
It leans forward like that to prevent whiplash in the event of a crash (keeps your head from snapping backwards). Try raising the headrest to see if that helps. I noticed mine is right in the back of my head if I put my head back a little...but that's only if it's all the way down. Not so if it's up more.
I looked a little harder at the headrest and it IS tilted forward and only touches the top of the back of my head but, as lariatf150 pointed out, these are more for whiplash protection than comfort.
