Originally posted by texan69ranger since yal just brought up headers, i have a statement for those, i bought some haeders for a 390 and what pissed me off is they will not fit, there is NO room for then, if you were to get any headers, you would have to get custom shortys, i was very frustrated to find out they wouldnt work, i just got my truck back yesterday from the shop i put it in and they showed me why they wouldnt fit, and said no headers would prob fit unless they were shortys, so if you were goin to buy headers that say they fit for the 390, unless they area shortys, dont waste your money
I think the shop is jerkin your chain.
I've had the same motor and headers in two different trucks.
Started out in a 66 F100 with a NP435, then swapped it into the current one (had a T18) with a C6.
It takes a little effort to get them in, sounds like they didn't want to do the work.

It depends on the headers your talking about, some will out and out not fit. I know theres several different kinds that will, however. Most, like you said, just require some added effort to make fit.
I'd love to get a set for my truck....yah, if wishes were horses...I could sell them and buy expensive truck accessories
Well, I did just learn that the Dynomax's won't work if you have a Bendix steering box. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=190410
I already knew about the F250 C/S with a sway bar not working.
I guess that could be a possibility on a F100, but I haven't personally seen a 69 F100 with a factory sway bar in front.
Is this an option for the 1/2 tons?
well, they worked on my truck for a week, and they were about to get a cherry picker and raise my engine to put them on, and even then, they didnt look like they would fit, i looked my self, there is just no room, the ones i bought were long tube, if you got headers what kind did you get?
I've got Dynomax Blackjacks, they are long tube (equal length).
If you have a cherry picker available, use it, it will make things a little easier. You have to, unless you have shorty's, jack up the motor and remove the starter to get any brand of headers in. After they're in, you have to put the starter back in before you bolt the headers up to the heads.
Hence the name "headaches".
When I swapped engine/trucks this time, I set the headers into the engine bay first. When I had first installed them in the ol'66, I had to jack the motor up as far as it would go to get them in and I was pretty skeptical even then if they were going to fit.
But they did.
Try Flow tech headers. The only headache was removing the passneger side engine mount and frame pice to get the header to fit. That header on that side is designed to around that mount. The flow tech headers are cheap too. $100 for a set I think.
Sounds like the shop didn't know what they were doing.
