Hi guys, new to this site. Need to replace the Pirelli A/T's on my 95' stock 2wd F-150 ext. cab. Looking to combine improve winter traction with a smoother highway ride. Was quoted $346 for a set of Wrangler RT/S. 235 75/R15. Would this be a good choice?
The RTS is a pretty smooth quiet tire for a truck and should suite your needs well. I have noticed the RTS seems to be prone to cupping. Be sure to rotate them frequently and make sure your alignment is correct and that will help minimize that problem.
FWIW, I'm looking to get rid of the RT/S's on my expy. They do perform well on the highway and on ice, but they're junk in fresh snow and mud. I'm planning to try something in the BFG lineup... either Land Terrains or Long Trails. Sorry, I don't have any experienced recommendations for you, but just wanted you to know my disappointment with the snow/mud traction of these tires.
Most TireRack reviews don't speak too highly of the Goodyear RT/S brand. Maybe I'll check out Bridgestone. I had hoped that the Pirelli Scorp. A/T's would have helped in the snow. But, traction has always been a big problem.
If you decide to go with another set of ATs, I highly recommend the BFGs. They're not exceptionally noisy on the highway and have excellent winter traction. I would continue to shop if you're looking for a mostly highway tire, though.
Whatever you do, DON'T get the BFG Long Trails. I disliked mine so much, I replaced them with half the tread still on them. I'm now using the Bridgestone Revo's and they're better in EVERY way. (More traction in all conditions, less squealing around corners, and a bit smoother too.)
I got them as Ford's offical replacement for the Firestone's I had before. It took less than a week to decide that it was a big mistake. The Long Trails were worse in every way. I've been driving (legally) for 25 years and without a doubt, they're the worst tires I've ever had(can you tell I don't like them. lol)
Ok, here my quickey review of the Long Trails. Scale is 1 to 10 with 10 being the best tire I've driven on: dry roads = 5, wet roads = 4, snow = 2, handling = 6, ride = 4, noise = 4. They squeal around modest corners. In the rain, I HAVE to engage 4wd on slight inclines because my truck will sit there spinning it's tires(and I have limited slip dif). In the snow, they're frightning.
