Post Manual transmission shifting problems

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Aug-02 AT 10:27 PM (EST)]I recently purchased a 1996 F250, PSD with a 5 speed manual transmission. The truck has 115,000 miles. I have started to have a problem with shifting the trans. into 1st and Rev., all the other gears seem OK at this point. The problem only happens when the engine is running. It is next to impossible to shift into Rev. and with some effort it will go into 1st. I can shift with ease without the engine running, so I don't think the problem is in the transmission. I have checked the oil level on the slave cylinder and it is set to the proper level. I can shift into 1st or Rev. and then start the engine, with the truck on level ground, the clutch fully depressed the truck will "creep" forward or backwards depending on the gear I have choosen. I have tried to make a spacer and slip in between the clutch fork arm and the slave cylinder to see if this might help but it made matters worst. I couldn't get the truck into any gear. Any help or suggestion on this matter would be greatly appreciated for this is my first diesel truck with a manual transmission.

Thanks,
TE

hey te, first off welcome to the club! it sounds to me like you have 2 problems. first one is yer clutch is goin out. that would explain it wanting to "creep" in first er reverse. thats would also explain why it is hard to get into first and reverse. but, it doesnt explain it if it isnt hard to get into the other gears while the truck is running. that leads me to the second problem. it sounds like a synchronizer problem. i had a mustang that had a 5 speed that acted the same way only it was in 3rd gear. hope ive been of some help. let us know how what happens.

Its your clutch and pressure plate! while in there change pilot bearing and throwout bearing.make sure the flywheel is in good shape also.
The reason your other gears will go in, is the syncro's are in fact doing most of the work because of the ratio's being close enough.
115,000 miles on a clutch is darn good!

Thanks for the information. Hopefully I will get a chance to start working on the truck this weekend. I'll let you know if I get it fixed.

I have replaced the clutch assembly on my truck and all seems to be working very well now. I had my doubts at first when removed the old clutch assembly, the clutch disc didn't show much wear and I thought this might not be the problem. I finished the replacement job and reassembled everything and the truck shifts very nicely now. I did find the pilot bearing in the flywheel was bad but the throwout bearing was still in good shape, I went ahead and replaced everything while I had it apart. Thanks for all the help.

I missed replying to you post earlier.Your pressure plate was probably dragging in one spot. It's a good thing you noticed the pilot bearing problem while it was apart. It is pretty much standard procedure to replace the friction disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing all at once, since it's apart already.
It is good to know that your problem is taken care of and you're rolling once again.
