My '66 F-250 Camper Special has a '73 460. Just installed a tach.
and need to know the max rpm rating. As far as I know, it's all stock w/ 4bbl carb.
Thanks.
I'd say these motors can tolerate 6k at max rpm. Seen 'em with stock rods spun to that all the time and hold together. Now, if yours is totally stock there isn't any reason in the world to spin it past 5k, as AirHarley said...but they will tolerate more.
I agree, what with his engine being what it is there isn't any point running it up past 4500-5k.....but I've seen stock rods last easily up to 6k. I've never heard the stock rods in these engines were "weak"...and most other racers I've talked too agree that they are good up to 6k. Not trying to be argumentative, just wondering where you got your info as I can always stand to learn something new.
BTW, I ran stock rods in a 460 for three seasons at 6k pulls with nary a problem. Not that thats where I base my info, just a testament.
I have a 468 .040 over with keith black pistons. It is also balanced and it used to see 7000 quite often this was a stock class mud race motor. I used just 78 car rods that were shot peened and polised with arp bolts and never had a problem. Hey... you gotta live a little every now and then
