I have been lurking around this for forum for a couple of weeks and I am impressed with the amount of info and help available so I thought I would join. My current truck is a 01 GMC 1500 4x4. It is OK but not quite what I had hoped for. I tow a boat with a gross weight of 7000# and the GMC (rated at 8000 tow capacity) can not maintain OD even on flat ground at sea level. I have decided to go with a diesel. The new SD with a 6.0 has really caught my attention but to be honest I'm also considering the new Dodge. For now, I have two questions:
A. Does the new 6.0 PSD have a cat? EGR?
B. The literature talks about the new variable turbo helping at altitude. Does anyone know just how this helps or why its better than a fixed turbo at altitude?
Don't know specific answers to your question, but would caution you about buying a first year model release vehicle. Even though these are "tested" before released, you're still a guinneau pig for FORD, especially the new 5r tranny.
The Do*ge is also new, and the Cummins is real nice, but its in the same boat as the new 6.0. The biggest problem with the Do*ge is its in a Do*ge body They're not known for superior craftmanship, and Ford can make lemons or lemonade depending how lucky you get
You might consider buying a 7.3 powerstroke while you can find one as it IS proven and has only a few issues in some trucks (cackle). With a chip, they'll make the horsepower of the new 6.0 version.
Just my .02 cents.
Exactly, that's why I stayed away from the first year 6.0. I bought an '02 7.3. Although I know they are not as advanced as the new 6.0 is supposed to be, they are tried and proven engines. I can always watch the new 6.0 and trade up if I really have to in the future. Although I really likt the 7.3.
