I am almost ready to drop the new(er) '88 Model Lincoln Town Car Motor into my '76 F-100, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to have to install an electric fuel pump. The motor in the truck is currently an early 80's motor and has a mechanical fuel pump, and I need to know if the camshaft in the new motor will operate the mechanical fuel pump. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
If so you will need the electric fuel pump, as the mechanical one does not generate enough PSI. I would run an electric one anyway. At least if it gives out you aren't going to dump any gas intot he crankcase.
I am going to run a carb setup on the engine. I just need to know if anyone knows if the '88 motor has the gear that runs the mechanical fuel pump, since the new motor is fuel injected.
Would Ford have put the gear on the cam of an '88 302 if it didn't need to run a mechanical fuel pump?
I'm not a TOTAL idiot, but is the eccentric a piece that I would call a parts store for and ask, or am I going to have to go with an entirely new cam? I appreciate your helpl.
I don't know first hand if the eccentric os there or not, but I know that this discussion has come up here before and the eccentric IS there even though it is an EFI motor, however the timing cover is a little different.
The eccentric is not there, but can be retrofitted from the '76.
The timing gears are different. The later model cover lacks a hole for the dip stick tube and has a different seal. Other than that I think he's good to go. The timing cover need not be changed as they bolt up exactly alike.
If you need the dipstick tube, just drill a 7/16 hole in the flat spot that is on the cover.
However, there is an article on using the efi fuel pump on an engine with a carb.
The timing cover need not be changed as they bolt up exactly alike.
The EFI timing covers don't have a provision for a mechanical fuel pump and would need to be changed if one were to need to use a mechanical fuel pump.
I don't think it will. I believe the efi roller uses a reverse rotation pump, and the earlier timing cover uses standard. I am pretty sure but not positive. There was a year that used a reverse rotation timing cover and had a mechanical fuel pump boss, somone will jump in and give you the specifics. Or summit offers a universal timing cover that will work as well, however pricey at $100, and yes you can ask for a fuel pump eccentric anywhere and they will know what your asking for. As previously menitoned some of the efi motors actually had the fuel pump eccentric installed on the cam, so unless you have already looked, there may very well be one there. Good luck
