Unhappy $80 For Replacement Key....HELP!!!!

Ok I lost the second key for my Expy! To replace the key it's $80.00. Maybe it's me but 80.00 dollars is a bit much for a key. The key is actually 40.00 and the programming is another 40 on top of that it takes 1.5 hours to program. Anyone have any ideals on getting replacement keys made?

Someone posted something here about buying the keys off ebay, then programming them yourself.

Question EBAY

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you need 2 keys in order to program the replacement key. I only have the one right now. If I'm wrong please tell me how I can program without the second key.

Also, I was able to buy the remote from ebay for 16.00 dollars. Ford wanted 52.00 for that. So If anyone has lost your remote check out ebay.

The posting did mention you need to buy two keys and program them both. Something like that.

Before you program a key you must have 2 keys already programed for you to do it yourself. If not you will need dealer or locksmith who is able to do it.

You can get a new key off of e-bay. I was able to pick one up for 10 dollars, and then I had it cut at the hardware store. I programmed it in 5 minutes, but I had both original keys. Since you don't have the originals, you will have to go to the dealer.

mistercmk is right. I had to purchase two keys (from eBay - $20 for both) and had to have the dealer program them since I only had one original (about 30 minutes). Unfortunately, there's no way around that, but you don't have to buy the keys from the dealer... PATS OEM or PATS generics are available all day long on eBay.

Ok, how do you program a 3rd key if you have the 2 other ones? I would like to have a spare, and love the idea of not paying ford to do it.

If you have your owner guide it tells you in there. If not just let me know and I will post the directions for you.

Also thanks guys for all of your help. I guess I will order a couple of keys off ebay to be programmed.

I bought two off ebay for $25 and just called around to the local shops...got them both cut and programmed for $40...just make some phone calls around your area after you get them.

If I remember correctly, only the 1998 Exp could be programmed with one key.

Good luck...

The guys over at www.f150online.com have a tech article on how to program the key, and remote. I don't remember if we have one here. The remote is just as easy, I got my extra key saturday, and the remote came today. Took 10 minutes total to program the key, and remote. It only cost 1 dollar to have the key cut too.

Thanks guys for the help! I order two keys and remote from ebay today! I also called around and it seems like the dealer is the only one around here to program keys. Since the 99 expy needs 2 keys looks like I'm going to have ford program it for me. However I did save 30 dollars by buying second key from ebay! I also save another 30 by buying the remote from there too.

Once I get my second key best believe I will put the 3rd one in a very safe place!

Thanks again!

I suggest you call "Lock & Key" businesses in your area. The best price I found in town was through a local locksmith. He had the computer equipment...hooked up to the EXPY, took 16 minutes to read the code and program it. He charged $25 for the programming and $2 to cut the PATS key I bought on ebay.

I also bought a 3rd spare key and remote off of ebay. Thought it was cheap insurance and both were easy to program. Note: be sure to "reprogram" all your remote keyfobs at the same time or the originals won't work. Then you'll need to run all of them through the program routine again.

If you have memory seats, like I do, you will need to program the number one position remote first, then number 2 second, and the number 3 third, that way the right remote will have the right seat position.
