I am about to part with my 97 Expedition Eddie Bauer and go with a newer 2000 Eddie Bauer. Just wanted your thoughts. Dealer is willing to drop to $19k here in Colorado and the vehicles has the following, obviously some of this is standard:
2000 Med Wedge Blue Expedition Eddie Bauer
62k Miles
4 New Tires (Michelins)
Heated Seats & Mirrors
Obviously Power & Memory Seats
6 Disc Changer
Mach Audio
5.4l V8 260
Clean with only 1 ding on the rear bumper actually on the step on the rear bumper and the rear cup holder in the floor console needs looing at as it doesn't close properly.
They're also willing to give me $12,900 for my 97 on trade
Does this sound like a good deal ?
Also can anyone help me out by telling me how the door codes work and if they are user programmable or if I will need the dealer to work it out for me ?
One last question, I forgot to check to see if the 2000's have the latch tethers for child seats so again if anyone can answer that would be great
That price sounds a little high. In fact, that is my truck exactly, only has 32k miles and I wouldn't expect to get that much for it. Make sure you check out Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds to make sure that deal is solid. Sounds like they're treating you alright on the trade in. Pricing is regional. Either way great truck.
The keypad can be reprogrammed. Do a search on this site and you'll be able to locate the factory code under the dash. The procedure for entering your personal code is in the owner's manual.
I do not have the latch tethers. There are tether straps on the back of the rear seats.
I looked on KBB and they rate it at avg retail $19,757 even with the 62k miles. In fact even on Autotrader the lowest is $21k in my area
I would have loved to have been able to afford an 01 but my wife and I are expecting our first child in 2 weeks and wanted something newer than my 97 that wasn't going to break the bank.
How do you like the 2000, anything I should look out for at the dealer tomorrow before I sign ?
See if you can dicker with the dealer to lower the price a little, but if they aren't willing to budge, it sounds like an alright price. Make sure that they fix the cupholder. For the code, there is a factory set code that cannot be replaced. You can find that under the dash on a black box on the drivers side. You can also put in a secondary code too. See if you can get the dealer to detail the truck, and fix the ding in the bumper. Other than that, it is an excellent truck. I love mine, and wouldn't trade it for any other. You will especially like the heated mirrors, seats, and the memory seats.
Kelly Blue Book is not an accepted reference to get vehicle costs. It is a good baseline, and they are fairly close to what you might see. Most dealser use the National Auto Dealers Association book.
I agree with the above comments...the trade in value is pretty fair...but the price on the newer Expy is HIGH. I recently bought my 01 Expy with half the miles for several thousand less. How far are they off? Hard to say exactly. I'd expect that you should be able to close the deal with the trade plus $5K out the door EASILY. Even that's pretty steep. If they're being honest on your trade-in value, I'd think the real price should be closer to trade plus $3500-4000. I don't think you're gonna get close to the deal I got.
As a sidenote--the way I got the deal I got was to buy from a Lexus dealer. They had taken the Expy on trade, hadn't marketed it, and had it on their lot for 40 days. No one 'just coming to the Lexus dealer' came looking for Expeditions, so it sat. I spied it on the lot, made an offer I thought they'd refuse, and we worked out a deal!
Also can anyone help me out by telling me how the door codes work and if they are user programmable or if I will need the dealer to work it out for me ?
Look under the dash, close to the driver kick panel.
The factory code is there, to add your custom code; follow direction in the owners manual or search the site and you'll find it here.
Went back down this morning and made sure the cupholder worked okay. My only other concern is that this does not have air ride like my 97 and so in the cold (its -16 here in Colorado today) as I was bumping over things the shocks were squeaking, anything I should be concerned about ?

I have a 2000 EB Expy...can seem to find the code. can you please give a more detailed desc so I can locate the code. thank you
We just purchased a used '99 EB same color as your looking at, fully loaded with everything but sunroof with 44 K miles, for $14,700 here in San Diego area. That 2000 has high miles and a bit expensive. I'd keep looking, We looked for 2 months until the right one came around.
The trucks without the sunroof have a bigger upper console, thats why I went without the sunroof. I wanted the spots for the garage opener, and sunglasses.
I am sure that prices are different in different areas of the country, but I paid 19.5 for my Expy in the sig. below and by checking the auto trader and all the pricing services, it was priced below the average. If it is in good shape, and it sounds like it is, the price does not sound bad to me. I would bet you could get a great deal on an expy in San Diego, my brother lives there and gas is $.40 a gallon higher there than here so that 20 plus gallon fillup is going to hurt a little more there, that is for sure. I can say this, I have no regrets with mine thus far, it is a great vehicle.

I took the vehicle home overnight to test it out and loved it but unfortunately financing is a pain in the a** as the total (due to negative equity in current 97 Expy) takes the vehicle over retail which of course then means can't be financed (above retail) and I unfortunately cannot afford to put a whole lot down so will have to keep looking for a cheaper Expy, maybe even a 99 or 99 Navigator, something that has a higher average retail with some miles on it.
The one thing it opened my eyes to was the dealer. I go back to pick my 97 up and the tire is completely deflated. TO say I was a little pi**ed at the treatment they showed me after that is an understatement but at least I found out about their care and attention before spending a lot of money. The search continues but my problem is that I'm having a hard time finding anything in my area. Now if I was able to buy with cash outright etc I would go with dealers on Ebay motors as there are always deals to be had if you can get to Texas, Cali etc but just not locally here
My wife and I are expecting our first child in 12 days time and was just hoping to find something before then. If anyone comes across anything in the Colorado area just drop me a line. Thanks for all the comments and advice in the meantime, much appreciated
Be very careful about buying a car on eBay that you can't test drive or kick the tires on. I have heard several horror storiesabout Ebay cars. I'm sure the opposite is also true, but its a big gamble buying a car that you can't touch. And don't get me started on dealing with used car dealers in general.
Have you considered trying to sell your car to a private party or buy a Expedition from a private party?
Sometimes the best car you can get is the one you have. How's your '97?
