Mercon V
Another suggestion I would make is to install an oil cooler for the auto trans. I read a few articles on this subject that make sense. The oil goes through the radiator cooler, which means that the trans oil is around 190 F going back to the tranny. They say for every 20 degrees F the oil goes over 175, its useful life is cut in half. If I find out any more info, I'll send you a post.
A new automatic transmission fluid (MERCON V) was introduced in 1997 for use in some Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. This new MERCON V fluid is not used in all applications and is not interchangeable with others transmissions fluids that are currently used. Using the incorrect fluid may cause transmission or transaxle concerns...
....Ford Motor Company uses two automatic transmission fluids in the transmissions now being built. Either MERCON" or MERCON V automatic transmission fluid may be called for, depending on the type of transmission and the year the transmission was built. Although both fluids are excellent, they exhibit different properties and should be used only in the transmission for which they were designed. The vehicle owner and rebuilder should replace fluid with the type printed in the Owner's Guide and on the automatic transmission fluid level indicator. Refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide to determine the correct service interval. Failure to use the recommended fluid may affect transmission performance and durability.

Your Ranger trannies are designed for and require Mercon V. As you can see from the above, it is very important to use a Mercon V-rated fluid in there. Mobil1 is a fine ATF fluid, but it is not Mercon V-rated. Amsoil is not Mercon V rated, either, although it you ask Amsoil they will tell you that it is.
All Mercon V fluid is semi-synthetic, so you can feel good about that.
Stick with a good Mercon V-rated fluid!
