I had my truck keyed while I was at work about a month ago..I decided to take my truck to the same body shop we take our rental cars because they do excellent work, so I thought. It was about a 3' scratch on the drivers door all the way to the ext. cab door. I put the truck in the shop last Monday (9/16) and it was delivered to me at work on Wednesday (9/18). They did great body work, I'll give them credit for that, you can't even tell there was a scratch. I was happy with the work, the paint matched perfectly, so I gave the OK to release the truck back to me. I parked the truck and went straight back to work. At the end of the day, I noticed they had drove my truck 60 miles!!! Not only that, but they didn't even bother to cover up their tracks, they left my tank 1/4 low (I had filled up the night before I took it in.) I called the shop the next day, but no manager was available, so they said they'd call me back. Well they called back, but they called the manager at our other office who didn't even know my truck was in the shop. I had pretty much decided to let it side and not get riled up about it...what can they do? Give me 60 miles back? I'm not going after them for the 1/4 tank of gas..they gave me a hefty discount to begin with. All was well until Sunday night. There is a film peeling off the front corner of my bed where it meets the cab. At first I thought the film was the "slime" the body shop coats the cars with after the work is completed..but that dissolves and suds up with water...this stuff didn't. The new girl at work took a piece of the film home to her husband who is 15 years in the body shop business..he says it's the clearcoat, and the work will have to be re-done. I went freaking ballistic!! How can a simple repair job go so damn bad?? What I don't understand is why the hell clearcoat would be on the bed! The clearcoat on the doors is fine and isin't chipping anywhere (yet)...is this crap just overspray due to a sh*^^y masking job? If I scrape the new clearcoat off...will the factory clearcoat be affected in any way?
The wife's car was keyed right after we bought it....we were relativley new to the area & didn't know of a good shop to go to, so we went to the Nissan dealer's shop. They didn't fill the scratches, just feather edged them...the paint was more textured and the color didn't quite match, IT IS BLACK!
On another topic with this car, it appears that it may have been in an accident before we bought it, NEW! They didn't mention it. I was wondering why it was built in Fall '97, delivered to the dealer in Jan '98, and still on the lot when we bought it in Aug '98. Also they added the spoiler & pinstripping.
I'm glad I now have a bodyshop owner in the family.
The clearcoat peeling from the bed is likely the result of a blend on the bedside this is common for proper color match. The problem could be anything from bad material to incorrect technique. You should not attempt to remove any more clear take it back to the shop and make them aware they should schedule you for a redo at your conveince.
My family has been in the bodyshop for years and i have to tell you these things sometimes happen no matter how you do the job automotive paint is very very irritating at times hope this helps let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks buckeye, thats exactly what the new-girl's husband later told me. That they didn't scuff the bedside properly and the clearcoat had nothing to properly adhere to and just started chipping off. Look's like I'm going to take my truck back to these monkeys.
