I noticed that the rear in the truck that I just bought is clicking when I spin the wheel. the axle seal was bad and it apears that there is no fluid left in the rear. Is this why it is clicking or is it allready shot, and if I need to replace the third member what do I need to look for besides gear ratio.
The most common is 28 spline. 31's are out there, but not sure how popular they were.
As for clicking??? Not really sure what the problem is there. If it does not WHINE or HOWL while going down the road, then it is most likely OK. There may be problems with the side gears or possibly the spider gears being worn out.
The clicking sound could just be the shoes chattering if they got wet with oil- I've heard them chatter brand new, too. Pull the wheels and drums off and spin the axles to see if it goes away. Put the tranny in Neutral and spin the drive shaft also.
I pulled the other wheel and drum yesterday and the brakes fell out in pieces that was my clicking problem I just wanted to thank jds1971 and everyone else for their advice.
