Hey guys. I was wondering what you folks thought about getting more power out of the 292 on a 1954 F-100. Should I bother or should I install a much more powerful newer 302 or 351? Can you give me some advice. Thanks
ED
What a wonderful time we live in today! We have the freedom, know-how and the choices that represent both sides of your question.
If you wish to maintain the spirit and history of your truck, built a half century ago, your choice is clear. There are parts available to perk up that old y-block and reference material to guide you. There are not a few who correspond here who can give you first hand, expert advise. This is a satisfying and expensive way to personalize (hot rod) your truck.
From the purely practical... as practical as it is to run a high horsepower pickup truck... standpoint, one can spend less in some areas of increased power and spend more mounting it on that 50 year old frame. Again... parts are plentiful and relatively cheap... the expertise also resides here among our viewers.
The question really is... how cool do I want to make my truck? Is traditional cool or is what is currently popular cool? You want to stand on tradition or be like a thousand other guys? Guess you can see where my vote lies. Traditionally hot rod. himmelberg
Do all of us Texans talk like you. I think you just advised me to stay with the 292 and if not go bigger. Is it that much more expensive to keep the 292 and give it a lot more power? What kind of BHP do you think can coax out of a well massaged 292 without going with a blower or supercharger. Have you heard of anyone here blowing or supercharging one? Ed
I was reading about the 292 here and it appears that it would not have been an original moter in a 1954 Ford F-100. Is that correct. You guys are going to save me a bunch of money. Hope this turns out to be as good as my MC forum. BTW my wife drives a 2004 F-150 Supercrew which is why I cannot afford to buy a new one for my self. This is going to be allot of fun.
Of course, all Texans speak with grace and intelligence. I am from Jersey... must have picked up language skills here in west Texas. Keep your 292. It didn't come stock in your '54... that's an issue for restorers (the best they could do was the 239ohv, new in '54).
You want a classy hot rod truck? Find some headers, three deuces, some of Mummert's parts like heads, cam and hot ignition and you're where you want to be. There is a wealth of y-block info on the net... check out the y-block engine forum, too.
Your question seems to ask " how much horsepower can I get?"... the answer is, as always, how much you can afford. Yes, there have been many blown y-blocks of yore. I am not an expert... not even a pundit. Just whipping out my opinion of what is cool. These are old engines with potential that transcends their 50 year old technology. That is cool. Probably as cool as Niolon. Himmelberg
You may want to find out what engine you have. look in the very back near the dissy to the right you might find 3 letters cast into the block those ledders may tell us what engine you have. Or they will be above the oil filter.
Well said Himmleburg, I may need to move to west Texas to learn how to talk or wright that way.
