Rear End Noise

On my 97 Expedition E.B. 4x4 w/5.4 -90k miles

There's something going on with the rear end. driving around town it's fine but if I get more than 30-40 hiway miles on it, it feels like something is slipping as I'm pulling away from a stop. It's especially bad when making a right hand corner.

It doesn't seem to do it when going straight, but it will also do it when making a left. The longer the drive, the less turn it takes to get the slip.

I bought it used and I don't know the history of it, but I can see the pumpkin has been off before (sealer around it).

Any ideas?

BTW: This is my first post here but this site is an awsome source of info.

Welcome to FTE!! I suggest changing the differential fluid. Make sure to add ford's limited slip additive, if you have limited slip.

On the driver's door is a vehicle certification sticker, listing various info about your Expy and also containing a barcode. Below the barcode look for the word "AXLE". Below that, a two digit code is found. If the two-digit code starts with a letter, your Expedition is equipped with a limited-slip differential. If the code starts with a number, your Expedition is equipped with an open (non limited-slip) differential.

The code is H6. That is one of the options that I was thinking that it wasn't actually slipping but binding going around the corners. Do I have to get the limited slip additive at the dealer or can I get it at a parts store?

Also, anyone know how I change my username?

I would think you can get it at the parts store, I have never needed it. Try giving them a call, and if they don't have it, then talk to the dealer. As for your other question, you would have to create another account. You can't change it after you have created your account.

When you say "something is slipping as I pull away from a stop" I am pretty confident it is NOT a problem with the rear diff.

But to be honest - I am a little confused about your description of the problem. Could you go into more detail?

When you say slip - my gut reaction is the only part in the system that is NOT a hard-part connection: the auto transmission.

But hey, I may be wrong!

From your description of longer drives making it worse, I'd say you need more friction modifier in the rear. Check the differential fluid level, to make sure it is not low.

All expy's are sealed with liquid gasket.

Shouldn't he just replace all the fluid, that way he knows how much is in there, and what kind it is. He also wouldn't be wondering how much friction modifier is in there.

I should probably do mine as well.

DRM, It feels like one tire is in a puddle of oil. There is only a slight vibration and noise that definetly sounds like its coming from farther back than the trans. I'm pretty sure it's not tranny related as that would make it hard to explain the fact that it's never happened going straight, and worst around right hand corners.

The more I think about it, I pretty sure that its something with the limited slip and is actually not slipping but binding or not working properly in some way.

This weekend I'll change the fluid and add the friction modifier and see what happens.

Thanks for the help everyone.

When you refill the diff case, put the modifier in first.

Curious

I am curious did the fluid change and the friction modifier fix the rear end problem?

It's hard to say if that's what did it or not. If it did, it wasn't immediately.

Probably 5 K miles after I changed the fluid I noticed that it seemed better. But I noticed it was better right after I put new upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and 4 new shocks in!

Either it took a while to actually help or the noise I was hearing was actually in the suspension stuff that I replaced.

Whatever it was, I used to hear it after just driving and it got really bad when pulling a light (snowmobile) trailer 20 miles. Since then I've started pulling a 3500lb boat and it hasn't done it, even after pulling it 150 miles.

I have a 2003 EB that has always done this since new, just thought it was the limited slip binding a little on sharp turns. Rear has never been serviced, not even 20k on it as of yet but will definately put that on my list of things to do and check out--especially since mine is still under warranty.
