diff play

how much play should be in the rear end, if any, as in turning the driveshaft back in forth. does this indicate backlash?

There are so many variables in doing gears To make sure the back lash and preload is correct you need to take the cover off and find out what there is inside of the diff. But the best way to have the gears set is to have someone that does them all the time do them or at least check them Depending on where you are in the country there are many shops that are set up for the challenge.

Go look in the tech article section for an article about rebuilding a 9". There's a whole section in there on setting backlash. I used that article to rebuild mine and it works great.

If you are setting up a new one use a dial indicator to set the backlash.
