Hi Guys,
As you all know there are several products (slick 50 etc.) on the market that say they improve engine, transmission life and gas mileage. I was wondering what do you guys recommend for my 99 expy?
There is no magic liquid that can improve everything. They don't do anything at all, except separate you from your wallet. The best thing to do to improve engine and tranny life is the change the oil often. Both in the engine, and the tranny. Also, make sure that you service everything frequently, according to your owners manual. By doing that, you will keep the truck in better shape, and you will keep your gas mileage good. If you really want to get better gas mileage, you can get a free'er exhaust, and a better intake, because the more air you can move in and out of an engine, the more efficient it is, after all, the internal combustion engine is just a big air pump.
Do not use anything except the reocmmended grade oil in your stock Ford engine. Oil treatments are all scams that have been proven to be worthless if not actually harmful to your engine. Be sure to use only the recommended grade oil even if you have high mileage or leaks. Using heavier oil because of usage due to blowby or leaks only guarantees bearing, valve, cam and other wear to accelerate rapidly.
Somewhere in this forum I believe, there is a good article about the common CONstituents of oil treatments including the most popular ones. Many lawsuits are being litigated every year for damages. Check the files at Consumer Reports. Ask the society of automotive engineers.
Don't ask racers. Few give a damn if the engine lasts 10K miles, they only want it to last to the end of the race they're in.
